Helping schools lead safeguarding with confidence
Hello, I’m Helen Hogan.
For more than twenty-three years I have worked alongside schools, supporting leaders, Designated Safeguarding Leads and governors to create safer environments for children and young people.
Throughout my career I have been privileged to work in education, social work and specialist safeguarding roles, giving me a unique perspective on the challenges schools face every day. That experience has shaped the way I work today, providing practical, proportionate advice that schools can confidently put into practice.
HH Safeguarding Matters was established because I wanted schools to have access to ongoing safeguarding support, not simply one-off training courses. Safeguarding is constantly evolving and schools deserve a partner they can rely on throughout the year.
Whether I’m delivering training, supporting a DSL, reviewing safeguarding practice or helping schools prepare for inspection, my goal remains the same: to provide clear, supportive guidance that helps schools feel confident in their safeguarding responsibilities.

My Journey
Qualified Teacher
Beginning my career in education gave me first-hand experience of the realities of school life and the challenges faced by teachers and leaders.
Registered Social Worker
Becoming a registered social worker broadened my understanding of safeguarding, child protection and multi-agency working, providing valuable experience that continues to inform my work today.
Education Safeguarding Specialist
Working within Sunderland’s Education Safeguarding Team and later co-leading Safeguarding First enabled me to support schools across a wide range of safeguarding issues, inspections and strategic developments.
Founded HH Safeguarding Matters
Today I work with schools across the country, helping leaders build confidence, strengthen safeguarding practice and create positive safeguarding cultures.

My Approach
Safeguarding should never feel overwhelming.
I believe schools need advice that is practical, balanced and tailored to their individual circumstances. Every school is different, which is why I take the time to understand each setting before offering guidance or recommendations.
Above all, I believe safeguarding is about people. Building trusted relationships with schools allows me to provide support that is meaningful, responsive and focused on achieving the very best outcomes for children.
